Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) Redefines Itself as Productivity & Platform Company

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) will be focusing on a new core—that is to redefine itself as a productivity and platform company for the mobile-first and cloud-first world, according to its CEO Satya Nadella in an e-mail to all employees of the software giant today.

According to Nadella, his main priority together with the senior leadership team of Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is to achieve the bold ambition and core of the company. He also indicated that they will shake up the culture within the software giant.

In his e-mail, Nadella wrote, “We must all understand and embrace what only Microsoft can contribute to the world and how we can once again change the world. I consider the job before us to be bolder and more ambitious than anything we have ever done.”

Under the leadership of former CEO Steve Ballmer, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was trying to establish itself as a devices and services company. During his tenure, Ballmer maneuvered the company towards building its own devices—the company launched the Surface PC and tablets. The company also acquired the devices and services business of Nokia Corporation (ADR) (NYSE:NOK).

Nadella acknowledged that the previous direction of Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) helped in its transformation, but he pointed out that currently, the company needs to refine its unique strategy citing the reason that it has a “rich heritage and unique capability around building productivity experiences and platforms.

According to him, Microsoft will change the meaning of productivity beyond producing something but also empowering people with new insights. Nadella said their new vision is “reinvent productivity to empower every person and organization on the planet to do more and achieve more.”

In addition, Nadella informed the employees that the leadership team of Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) will implement engineering and organization changes. Furthermore, he emphasized that their desire to achieving the bold ambition of the company should be the same when it comes to changing and evolving its culture.

“Nothing is off the table in how we think about shifting our culture to deliver on this core strategy. Organizations will change. Mergers and acquisitions will occur. Job responsibilities will evolve. New partnerships will be formed,” said Nadella.

According to him, their priorities within the company will be adjusted and “tired traditions will be questioned.  Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) will hire new employees, simplify its process and build new skills.  Nadella expressed commitment in transforming Microsoft as the best place for smart, curious and ambitious people who wants to deliver the best work.
