What Is Dallas Cowboys’ Cornerback Situation Right Now?

According to the multiple reports that have come from the people that are close to the Dallas Cowboys, as well as some people from the front office, this franchise is going to focus on the defense in 2017 draft. They are going to try and boost their weak spots, especially the position of a defensive end and the cornerback spot. The only first round pick that they have is the 28th overall, and one of these two positions will likely be addressed with their choice.

When it comes to the position that was the weakest last season, it was a defensive end, no doubt. But, with the departure of the players that played a lot of snaps in the defensive backfield, it seems that the corner position needs the most of the work.

Four Dallas Cowboys’ players that had a combined number of 2,656 snaps last year for them in the defensive backfield have new homes. Brandon Carr led them all with 1,015 snaps, Morris Claiborne, their most talented corner played 408 snaps last year while Barry Church with 676 and JJ Wilcox with 557 gave them a strong presence at the safety position. While these guys aren’t huge playmakers, they still gave some stability and depth to the positions that they play.

The only guy that has come in is Nolan Carroll, a player that is known for his speed, but just a middle-of-the-pack corner who spent his career playing for Miami and Philly. Orlando Scandrick is still on the team along with second-year corner Anthony Brown. These two are looking like starters at the cornerback position for the Cowboys right now, at least before the draft. There is no doubt that the team will get another quality pass defender later this month to boost that segment and pair him up with Scandrick who they really like.
