The show is actually based on the 2007 novel by Jay Asher, which made it to the New York Times Bestseller List. The book won a lot of awards with one of them being California Book Award For Young Adult.

Selena Gomez is on the team as the series producer. She was originally planned to cast in the role of the lead character Hannah Baker, but it was recently confirmed that she would not be joining the cast. It is her first outing as an executive producer.
